Title: The observations of Comet C/2007 N3 (Lulin) from SLT at Lulin Observatory

Abstract:
   The green comet C/2007 N3 (Lulin) is a new Oort cloud comet which has retrograde orbit (inclination = 178°). It reached its perihelion on January 10, 2009, and the closest distance to Earth was 0.411 AU on February 24. Soon after its discovery on July 11, 2007, the coma activity of comet Lulin was monitored closely by SLT 41-cm telescope until April 2009. After long time monitoring of comet Lulin the dust production rates (A(θ)) was estimated. We discovered the anti-tail in the end of Dec. 2008 and this anti-tail were last for quite a while due to an effect of the orbital geometry. We also found the coincidence between the jet activity and the peak of A(θ) values and this is a clue for us to realize what happens in dust coma of comet Lulin.

Title: The Hα Halo Distribution of 10 Nearby Planetary Nebulae based on the SHASSA Imaging Data

Abstract:
  Here we present initial results of our search for extensive halos around the planetary nebulae (PNe) in our Galaxy based on imaging data from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA). A threshold surface brightness in Hα emission was used to help identify the spatially extended features of the PNe. We investigated a sample that included 10 PNe, the large majority of which were found to be surrounded by extensive outer halos. The formation of these halos might be closely related to the AGB phase mass loss and/or the interaction of the stellar outflows with the interstellar medium. Most of these outer halos are nearly spherical. Close investigation of some specific objects, such as He 2-111 and NGC 3242, indicate a kinematic age on the order of 105 yrs. The mass loss history can be traced back to the late AGB phase of the evolution of the progenitors. Two objects form the sample (He 2-111, NGC 3242), were found to have outer halos with fragmented arcs that are apparently the result of their interaction with the interstellar medium.

Title: Obscuration in Type 2 QSOs and Their Environments

Abstract:
   Type 2 QSOs are possibly at a key stage of galaxy evolution that could reveal the process to decide whether the output power of an active galaxy is in an accretion dominated or starburst dominated phase. In this work, we carry out a statistical analysis of several multiwavelength properties of optically selected type 2 QSOs to compare their characteristics with those of type 1 QSOs. The type 1 QSO and type 2 QSO samples are from the released catalogues based on SDSS database. Our analysis results show that the 2 types of QSOs have systematic differences in their radio luminosity functions at 1.4 GHz, optical photometry, and dust obscuration indicated by the relative SDSS (g-i) color. However there is no indication of difference in environments, namely, the number density of galaxies in neighboring 1.5 Mpc radius region. Furthermore, we derive the lower limit of neutral hydrogen column density of selected bright type 2 QSOs using the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) data, and combine the result with their relative (g-i) color to discuss the nature of the obscuring material, as well as its implication to QSO evolution.

Title: Measurement of Gain and Readout Noise of CCD Camera PI 1300B at Different Temperatures in Lulin Observatory

Abstract:
   It is very important to check the CCD properties from time to time, because it is essential to the good calibration of scientific data. A series of works had been carried out by Kinoshita et al. (2005) and Huang et al. (2008) for the PI 1300B CCD of Lulin Observatory. We investigated the performance of PI 1300B CCD again for the gain and readout noise in normal operation temperature (-45°C) and higher temperatures. The gain is 1.98 ± 0.01 e-/ADU and readout noise is 4.2 ± 0.07 e- at -45° (slow readout mode). The results are consistent with previous works. An empirical relation between the CCD temperature and the readout noise is derived in this work. The readout noise of CCD increases exponentially with the temperature according to our empirical relation.
